Randall LaGro is a contemporary American painter and printmaker known for his lyrical abstraction and unique intuitive artistic process. Based in Taos, New Mexico, his work often features ethereal, dreamlike imagery that emerges from deep layers of abstract paint and ink.
LaGro begins his pieces with fast, abstract layers of color, which he calls a "volcanic under-painting". He then allows recognizable figures—such as faces, otherworldly creatures, or landscapes—to naturally emerge from these textures. He often incorporates diverse materials like gold leaf, sand, mica, and collage to create complex, tactile surfaces that he likens to the "layered and awkward yet elegant" nature of human life.
He is particularly recognized for his monotypes (one-of-a-kind prints) and large-scale oil and wax-based paintings.
