Baba Tree Basket Company has supported the basket-weaving traditions of the Gurunsi community in Bolgatanga, Ghana for more than two decades. Over 250 skilled artisans use elephant grass and time-honored techniques to create distinctive, handwoven pieces, each reflecting the individual style of its maker. Founded by Gregory MacCarthy after his first visit to Ghana in 1999, the company is rooted in the belief that thoughtful design can create meaningful social change. By fostering sustainable employment and fair working conditions, the organization continues to invest in the well-being and growth of its artisan partners. Through ongoing collaboration, innovation, and respect for tradition, Baba Tree baskets bring together cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary design for a global audience.
"Each basket bought plants the seeds of real change — for the land, the people, and the planet. We nurture the earth through regenerative farming, rainwater harvesting, and growing our own food. We also build and repair roads to strengthen local infrastructure. We stand by our weavers and their families — covering up to 100% of medical while ensuring fair pay and commission. From carbon-neutral shipping to cleanliness drives, we take active steps to reduce our footprint and build a greener future."
